Ajuga, commonly known as bugleweed, is a genus of 40 species of annuals and clump-forming evergreen rhizomatous perennials. It has attractive leaves which are opposite and entire, but occasionally can be toothed. Its flowers are two lipped and tubular and blue in color. They are generally produced in the axils of the leaves in whorls during the spring and summer.
Their native habitat is generally shady areas throughout Europe and Asia and spreads rapidly by stoloniferous rhizomes which makes this genera of plants especially useful as a groundcover or border. Ajuga is best grown in moist fine to medium textured soils in dappled to full shade. It requires a minimum pH of 5.50 and a maximum pH of 7.50, and medium soil fertility. It is not drought nor salt tolerant and needs frequent watering.It has a moderate lifespan and at maturity will attain a maximum height of 3.5"- 6.0". It is cold tolerant to -23?F. and will perform best in USDA Zones from 5-9. Propagation is by division, root cuttings, or in-vitro tissue culture. It is prone to Southern blight, fungal leaf spots, crown rot, and root rot.
