Ajuga australis, commonly known as Austral Bugle is an erect herb to 60 cm tall with large, grey-green: oblanceolate to obovate leaves , to 12 x 5 cm, toothed, finely hairy, grey-green above, paler beneath, arranged in opposite pairs along stems, and purple, tubular, to 15 mm long flowers with the apex of tube divided into two lips; lower lip fan-shaped with four, lobes, the two central lobes broader and longer than the others; upper lip much smaller, with two shallow lobes, hood-like and a calyx that is tubular, to 7 mm long, with 5 teeth. The blooming period is from spring through summer.

Its natural habitat is in a very wide range from low rainfall, sandy soils and, through a variety of woodlands and forests in southern and eastern Australia.The conservation status of this specie is one in which the specie is not at risk in the wild.It is primarily used for ornamental purposes as a ground cover in USDA Zones 3-9.Propagation is easy from either seed or cuttings.
